A CNE Legend is gone...... by Crystal Ransom
The Perogy Chef, an all too familiar face at the CNE, otherwise referred to by all his family and friends as “Bo” or as I would like to call him “BoBo”, passed away peacefully on November 28th, 2009 with his wife by his side. For the past 24 years the Perogy Chef has been and will continue to be a childhood memory for many who traveled both near and far to attend the CNE every summer for some of his famous perogies. The Perogy Chef has been a celebrity of sorts for many visitors at the CNE. As someone who has had the immense pleasure of working for BoBo over the past several years, I can’t tell you how many times a day I heard the phrases “this perogy booth is the only reason I come to the CNE ”, or “I’ve been eating at this booth since I was a child”, or “I’ve travelled hundreds of miles to come here for these perogies”. He definitely made an impression on people every day of his life. Both his delicious food and his larger than life personality were what made people come back for more. BoBo had a kind, gentle soul, and if you were in his presence he would make you feel as though you were the only one in the room. I know I speak for all his many, many friends at the CNE when I say that those 18 days out of every summer just won’t be the same without seeing his smiling face behind that perogy counter. Every year the Perogy Chef would celebrate his birthday at the CNE by working from the wee hours of the morning ‘till late at night like it was any other day. Regrettably, the summer of 2009 was unlike any other. Hundreds of his fans were disappointed when they realized that the Perogy Chef wasn’t behind the yellow and blue counter greeting people like he had been for the past 24 years. The Perogy Chef was diagnosed with lung cancer in August 2009. The summer of 2010 would have been a big year for BoBo (It was all he could talk about in 2009). On August 29th, 2010, the Perogy Chef would have reached the ripe ol’ age of 65. Oh how BoBo couldn’t wait to receive those pension cheques. Although to BoBo, a much more significant milestone was to come… 2010 would have marked his 25th Anniversary at the CNE! I’m hopeful that his family and friends will carry on his legacy at the CNE. The CNE – Food Building opens its doors on August 20th, 2010 at 10am sharp….so stay tuned. ONE BITE AND WE GOT CHA! In Loving Memory The Perogy Chef – Boris Hirniak August 29, 1945 – November 28, 2009

Norfolk County's Two Fairly Fat Guys The Two Fairly Fat Guys are Norfolk County's Official Food Ambassadors. They love to cook local food.
